Norway rats and their burrows
Norway rats dig. They live in burrow systems with several openings, usually along something solid: a slab edge, a fence line, the underside of a shed, a retaining wall or a creek bank. Inside are tunnels and nest chambers, sometimes with a few rats and sometimes with many more.
In Waco, burrows show up most in yards near the Brazos and Bosque rivers and the creeks and drainage channels that run through town, in older neighborhoods with sheds and detached garages, and around commercial dumpsters. Rats leave the burrows at night to feed and return before daylight.
What thorough burrow treatment includes
- Confirming the burrows are active, often by filling holes and checking which reopen
- Finding the food that keeps the colony there: trash, compost, pet food, birdseed, fallen fruit or feed
- Treating active burrows with a product approved for that use, applied by a licensed technician according to the label
- Trapping along runs between burrows and food
- Collapsing and filling treated burrows
- Blocking digging along slabs, sheds and skirting with buried hardware cloth or a gravel and mesh barrier
- Checking the house for gaps at ground level, since rats in the yard try the house next
Step by step
- The technician maps the burrow openings and the trails between them.
- Openings get filled and checked a day later to find active ones.
- Active burrows get treated, and traps go along the trails.
- Food sources get removed or locked down.
- Treated burrows get collapsed and filled.
- The technician installs digging barriers where rats keep returning.
- Follow-up checks make sure no new holes open.
Why burrows are harder in Waco
Soil conditions change with the weather. After rain, damp ground is easy to dig. In a long dry spell, soil can pull away from the slab edge, and rats use those gaps to start new tunnels. Burrows near creeks may flood after heavy rain and then reappear higher up the bank, closer to houses.
The city’s older neighborhoods have lots of outbuildings. Detached garages, sheds on blocks and old chicken coops give rats a dry spot to burrow under. Rural edges toward Robinson, China Spring and McGregor add feed storage and livestock, which keep rat colonies fed.
Yard rules that help
Waco’s solid waste rules say all waste must fit in the gray cart with the lid completely closed, and items outside the cart won’t be picked up. Brush piles are limited to 4 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet, one pile at a time. Waco’s Code Compliance division enforces rules against accumulated trash and debris on occupied or vacant lots, and against grass or weeds over 12 inches. The trash and yard rules guide covers those rules and how to report a problem lot.
Store pet food and feed in metal cans. Pick up fallen pecans and fruit. Keep compost in a closed bin. Rats with nothing to eat in your yard move on faster.
Questions to ask before treatment
- How will you confirm which burrows are active?
- What product will go into the burrows, and is it labeled for that use?
- Where will any outdoor bait stations go, and are they tamper resistant?
- Will you install digging barriers along the slab, shed or fence?
- How many follow-up checks are included?
Ask for the provider’s Texas Department of Agriculture license number before anything goes into the ground.
Roof rats don’t burrow
If you see damage high on the house or hear activity in the attic, you’re likely dealing with roof rats, which nest up high instead of digging. The roof rat vs Norway rat article shows how to tell, and the rat control page covers both.

How a call turns into a finished job
Call and describe it
Say what you've found and where. Your call goes to an independent local rodent technician who serves your part of the Waco area.
Inspection
The technician checks the attic, walls, garage, crawl space or slab edge and the roofline, then names the rodent and the entry points.
Trapping and sealing
Traps go on the active runs. Gaps get closed with metal, hardware cloth and sealant so new rodents can't follow the same path.
Follow-up and cleanup
Return visits clear the traps until activity stops. Droppings and soiled insulation get cleaned up if the job calls for it.
Rat Burrows
Rat Burrow Treatment: common questions
How do I know a hole is a rat burrow?
Rat burrow openings are usually 2 to 3 inches across, often with smooth edges, loose fresh dirt at the entrance and a beaten path through the grass to the next hole or to food. Snake and armadillo holes look different and lack the paths.
Can I just fill the holes with dirt?
Rats dig back out within a day if the colony is still active. Filling holes is a good test: if a hole is open again the next morning, it's active.
Is burrow treatment safe for pets?
Ask what product the technician plans to use. Burrow treatments and outdoor bait must follow the product label, and Texas rules require outdoor above-ground bait placements in tamper-resistant stations where children or pets could reach them.
Why are there rat burrows by my shed?
Sheds sit on blocks or skids with a dry space underneath, often near stored feed, seed or trash. Norway rats like that combination.
Do I need a license to put rat poison in burrows?
Homeowners can buy limited consumer products. Professional burrow products are for licensed applicators. The license guide explains the Texas rules.
Will rats leave if I remove their food?
Removing food helps a lot and makes treatment work faster. Closed trash cart lids, no birdseed on the ground and pet food brought in at night all cut off what keeps a colony in your yard.
