Rodents in China Spring
China Spring is an unincorporated community in northwestern McLennan County, about 12 miles northwest of Waco on Farm-to-Market Road 1637. Settlers arrived as early as 1860, and the community was founded in 1867. The name comes from a spring in a grove of chinaberry trees. By the early 1880s it had about 200 residents, five steam cotton gins and gristmills and three general stores. China Spring ISD serves the area, and the 2020 census counted 1,436 people in the census-designated place.
Today the area has a rural, ranch-style character, with homes on acreage, barns, pens and long fence lines.
Why rodents show up here
Rural properties feed rodents. Livestock feed, grain, hay, pet food and spilled seed keep mice and rats fed through every season, not only in fall. Barns, sheds and equipment that sits for weeks give them places to nest.
Fields and pastures hold field mice, and they move toward buildings when grass is cut or hay is baled. Norway rats dig along fence lines and under sheds and feed rooms.
Health risks are different out here too. The CDC says hantavirus spreads mainly through rodents like the deer mouse, which live in rural areas. Cleaning a closed-up shed or cabin calls for the wet method, never a broom.
What a technician checks here
Expect a look at the house first: slab edge or crawl space, weep holes, garage and attic. Then barns, sheds and feed storage. A good plan on acreage focuses on keeping rodents out of the house and the feed, since clearing every mouse from a ranch isn’t realistic. Garage and shed rodent control, rat burrow treatment and droppings cleanup cover most China Spring jobs.
Around the house and barn
Keep feed rooms closed and feed in metal bins. Clean up spilled grain and hay every day. Store tack, blankets and seed off the floor. Keep brush and old equipment away from the house, and check the house skirting or slab edge after hay is cut in nearby fields. Barn cats help a little but won’t clear an established population.

China Spring
Rodent control in China Spring: common questions
How do I keep mice out of my barn's feed room?
Store feed in metal bins with tight lids, sweep spills daily, keep the door shut and seal gaps at the base of the walls. Traps along the walls catch the ones that get in.
Is it safe to clean out an old shed with mouse droppings?
Use the CDC wet method: air it out, wear gloves, spray droppings with disinfectant, wait 5 minutes and wipe up. Don't sweep. Deer mice in rural areas carry hantavirus, according to the CDC.
Will a technician come out to acreage?
